Brought up on the island of Benbecula in the Outer Hebrides I was involved in many aspects of island life as I was a highland dancer and sang in Gaelic at local and national Mods and festivals. Living on a croft I was involved in the everyday life as I helped with the sheep, cows, harvest and peat lifting. At the time, as a teenager this was hard work but looking back I realise my involvement was crucial to the croft. After leaving the island as most do, I discovered Harris Tweed as I worked in an interior design shop on the south coast of England. I started Buchanan Cushions in 2007, as I was living on the island again and decided to use my experience and new found love of Harris tweed to start a website selling cushions.

Historically Harris Tweed was made by individual crofters to supplement their meagre earnings but it soon became popular and is now known worldwide as an exclusive cloth, used in fashion houses around the world. In recent times it has had a renewed interest and is a sought after fabric. Harris Tweed is exclusive to the Outer Hebrides and I use only tweed from the islands, with the unique Harris tweed labels to authenticate it.

I hope you enjoy the latest tweeds I have chosen to sell, it is a difficult choice as the colours are so rich and amazing that it took me a few hours in Harris !
